Laurent studied and learned all about designer fashion from the house of Dior, eventually starting his own couture company with his life partner Pierre Berge in the early 1960’s.

Pierre Berge told LCI television

“He knew perfectly well that he had revolutionised haute couture, the important place he occupied in the second half of the 20th century,”.

Seven years ago at Laurent’s farewell fashion appearance Saint Laurent told reporters that he had

“always given the highest importance of all to respect for this craft, which is not exactly an art, but which needs an artist to exist.”

“Chanel, Schiaparelli, Balenciaga and Dior all did extraordinary things. But they worked within a particular style,” he explained. “Yves Saint Laurent is much more versatile, like a combination of all of them. I sometimes think he’s got the form of Chanel with the opulence of Dior and the wit of Schiaparelli.”

says fellow designer Christian Lacroix.

The world of fashion will be a darker place without Yves Saint Laurent.

For some reason when anyone thinks of a model the image of a wafey, long legged woman appears in their mind. Which is really baffeling, since most models look nothing like that. Only a very small percent of models work on the runway.

When a business wants to attract a family, they use images that show regular every day people. People the average Joe can connect with. Every single magazine or newspaper you pick up will feature tons of models, and not the runway models we have come to think of. You see women, men, and children of all shapes and sizes. It’s the advertisers job to make people feel that whatever they are selling is what is normal, and that everybody has it or needs it.

Magazines are filled with photos of regular people of all ages, shapes, ethnicities and heights. So if becoming a model is your dream don’t count yourself out if you don’t look like the women on Vogue or the men in GQ.

Invest a few dollars in learning all you can, you will be able to avoid all the “bad and the ugly” in child modeling. One good resource is the Model Child ebook that explains how to get into child modeling. That’s why I recommend doing a lot of research before you take that first picture or call that first agent. Armed with knowledge you can pursue your child’s modeling career with confidence.

Learn to spot scammers and people who are not honest - and put distance between that person and your child. Beware of scam artists. Take care of your child while promoting their career. Your child’s welfare is your number one priority. Dishonesty, dishonest people are everywhere and that includes the modeling industry.

Stay alert and assertive and watch for people who try to bend you to their will. If it means manipulating you or your child, so be it. Some unscrupulous people will stop at nothing to get what they want. It is up to you to instill self confidence and awareness in your child so that they do not fall victim to the “bad people.” Manipulation, modeling is a manipulative industry and child modeling is no different. It is important that you remain close to your child as well as empower them to leave any situation that makes them feel uncomfortable.

The Ugly Side of the Modeling Industry, Bad People do happen to the modeling agency and often innocent children are the victims. That can be very frustrating as well. Perhaps your child has to maintain a certain weight. Frustration, most fashion shows are choreographed and it can be very frustrating when your child is trying to learn the choreography and feels pressured.

Make sure that your child is fairly flexible and resilient. There can also be jobs that fall during your child’s nap time or bed time, resulting in a cranky child. Odd Hours, sometimes, photo shoots and modeling jobs can fall at off hours. There is a certain loss of control that comes with modeling.

Your child may be required to keep his or her hair a certain way, remain at a certain weight and even be forbidden to eat or drink certain products. The Bad Side of Child and Baby Modeling, the deeper your child gets into modeling, the less control you will have. There are always the fur coats in summer and swimsuits in winter and those are not always glamorous and fun, but there are jobs that are lots of fun and very glamorous. Glamour, kids can get really caught up in the glamour of modeling and, let’s face it, modeling is really glamorous and fun - most of the time anyway.

Be careful what you wish for. With fame does come a certain degree of loss of privacy. For some people this is a perk, for others it is not so attractive. Fame, the more popular models, who have made it to the big time, do have a certain degree of fame. You may have to start out doing a few free shows before the money starts coming in, but if you play it smart; your child can make good money in modeling.

This is definitely an upside to child modeling. Everyone knows that the “big time” models make big bucks. The Good Side of Child Modeling, Money is a huge upside. If you go into it with open eyes and a clear picture of what you are getting yourself and your child into, you are more likely to stick with it and be successful. Child modeling, like any other kind of modeling, has its upsides and downsides.

If you’re thinking about allowing your baby to become a child fashion model make sure you have all the facts. If you use common sense and don’t get greedy your baby will not suffer at all. You really need to do your research and make your decisions based on that research. It may be hard on you, however. The whole session is planned around the child’s needs so that it’s not hard on the baby.

After all, babies don’t work. You can say stop at any time. Again, you are in control. Many times parents are concerned about the stress their child will experience as a child fashion model. But it is also dependent on your willingness to work with the child and see that he or she is not overextended.

To become a successful child model is highly dependent on having those qualities as well as having the right disposition for modeling. That’s a decision you will have to make based on your own gut feelings and convictions. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they should. If your child is displaying any of the above personality traits s/he might be a good candidate for a modeling or acting career. Does your child love to play dress up?

Does your child automatically strike a pose when they see a camera? Does your child love to show off? Does your child loves to sing and dance Does your child love to imitate? Does your child often have very animated expressions? Here are a few questions to ask yourself to help determine if your child has what it takes to be a child model: Does your child have an outgoing personality?

As a parent you know your child very well and you are the only one who can make that decision, there are a few guidelines that will help. Could she be the next Gerber Baby Model, or the new Coppertone Kid? Is your cute kid a child model success story hiding behind that mischievous grin? Is Your Child Ready to Be a Child Model? This lens talks about the child fashion model industry and offers resources for further discovery and discussion.

Could your child do that? Just ordinary looking kids but suddenly their smiling faces are appearing on toilet tissue, baby food, diapers and boxes of cereal. Child fashion models, we’ve all heard the stories of how the kid next door or down the street landed a sweet Child Fashion Model job and became an overnight child modeling success story.

It’s important to know that there is always a demand for models in minor markets such as Chicago, Philadelphia and Phoenix. No matter where you are based, if you sign with a big and popular agency that’s based in New York as most of them are, there is a fairly good chance that you’ll end up well. Hard work, attraction, connections and luck - all play a part in deciding where you end up in this profession.

The city of New York is known as one of the major cities for modeling opportunities. Once you decide to be a swimsuit model, the first job is to do a lot of research in order to find the right agency for your promotion. Swimsuit modeling is a very competitive field and the number of top models herein increase and decrease on daily basis.

Such pressures can take a severe psychological toll and may even be a risk to life. Many models end up doing this job only for a few years as it is pressurizing to live on a daily diet of rejection and keep up to look a particular way. The supermodels that we are so used to seeing around must have initially had to take on secondary jobs just to make their ends meet. Only a very few make it into the upper echelons of the profession.

It’s hard to make a good living and even harder to sustain it for more than a few years. Being a swimsuit model might seem easy but coming back to reality, modeling is just another job at the end of the day. Swim suit modeling very necessarily demands a good body.

Picking an agent for swimsuit models that is well known and established is important. Some of the best lingerie models modeling agencies look for bikini models but they may vary according to their requirements and choices. Every major city has well-established modeling agencies so you must get in touch with a few to get their opinions.

You can mail your picture and resume to all of the modeling agencies in your area. It is a swimsuit models duty to select swimsuit-modeling agents, who are correct for them. Having a models portfolio and gaining some basic instruction is important if you are considering taking up modeling as a full-time career. It will also help you when you audition for a modeling agency. There are various training schools out there that teach ramp walk, picture posing and hone your present skills as young models.

It is usually the young models with training and experience that are most wanted as swimsuit models.

First Ask Yourself - Do I want to be a model?

This is not a career choice for the meek. You need to have tough skin in this business. Despite the glamour and hype you have seen about the modeling profession, it’s hard work. It’s boring (sometimes) and it can be tedious. Prepared to be constantly rejected, get ready for some major ups and downs. Modelling is a lifestyle, not an 9-5 job. Not all jobs pay well. Unless you are seriously committed about modeling, willing to work at it on your own time, live a healthy life style, etc., you will not succeed as a model.

You have to understand that there are lots of other people who want to be models, it’s a very competitive business. Are you willing to put the time and energy into competing with pretty much everyone you meet, 24 hrs a day?

Where do I start
You’ll need a modeling portfolio, I’m sure you’ll all know what one of those is but for those that don’t it’s basically a selection of pictures showing yourself in different outfits and poses. The standard size for the photos is 9 by 12 inches and you’ll need around 10 - 12 photos. Make sure you focus on quality rather than quantity, remember, you’re only as good as your worst photo. Make sure your portfolio has a selection of both head shots and full body shots. Make sure you get a variety of different looks such as swimwear, catalogue and lingerie, you get the idea, also get a couple of black and white shots in there. Avoid using pictures of the same shot.

It can be very advantageous to have photographs from different photographers in a portfolio. This will show the versatility in terms of styles and it will prove that a model can work with a variety of different people. Obviously, the cost of hiring different photographers for a portfolio is prohibitive, but there are many excellent photographers out there who will do prints for time - and of course many more bad ones. If you research what’s on offer well, it can be an excellent alternative.

Before going ahead with a photo session ask to look at the photographers portfolio to see if you like his style of photography. No doubt if you go to the photographers studio to book the appointment he will have examples of his work on display anyway. If you’ve never done modelling before this will also be an excellent practice run for you. Avoid photographers wanting to take nude shots, if possible take a friend with you to the shoot.

The Comp Card
You’ll definately need one of these. A comp card is what your modelling agency will use to market you.

What is a comp card? A composite card (sometimes called a ZED) is a model’s business card. In most cases, your comp card is your one and only opportunity to make a good first impression. With that in mind it is important that the images on your card are your absolute best and nothing less. Additionally, the printing and reproduction quality is extremely important. Poor reproduction makes your images look bad and as a result - makes you look bad. Besides a great head-shot, the comp card will have other photos that show your experience, your versatility, range, and what type of work you are seeking. For best results all of the photos should be the highest quality you can obtain at your stage in your modeling career. Make sure the you have them printed on rigid card that will withstand a bit of wear and tear.

Be careful! Do NOT have a modeling agency print your comp card. If you do - they will put their logo on it. You are going to want to sign with as many agencies as possible if you are serious about getting work. Comp card printing can get expensive - print them yourself and give each agency copies - they have stickers that they can put on them with their contact information and you will save money.

The Agency
An agency or co-ordinator should represent models. The model must have a portfolio, and comp cards. The agency/coordinator provides you with work (That is their main purpose. It is safe to say that they work for you!) They make a commission on your fee.

GOLDEN RULE - Don’t go with an agency who asks for money up front! You’ll probably never hear from them again and I ceratainly doubt you’ll ever get any work from them.

Also check to see if they are reputable and genuine. The agency/coordinator provides you with a safe working environment and looks after legalities of the paper work for the job. They provide their clients with “Professional” models. Keep copies of all-important papers, such as contracts etc. You may need these if you have a dispute with the agency/coordinator. It is wise to choose the agency/coordinator carefully so you can stay with that them.

How do I approach an agency?
The oldest way to go about it is to visit them. Book an appointment ahead of time by phone. Bring at least 2 pictures. They don’t have to be professional pictures. A head shot, natural and clear. Also a full length shot that somewhat reveals your figure, a clingy dress , swimsuit, figure flattering clothes or other tight fittings garments should be worn. Forget about baggy clothes! It will tip off viewers that you have something to hide. Ask lots of questions. Ask to see what work their models are currently doing? Ask for names and phone number of clients and call them to verify the information, be concerned if they promise you work right away or promise you high salaries. If they don’t allow you time to think about it or if they use pressure techniques to sign the contract, be concerned. They should not ask for money up-front for classes or training. Be concerned if the they claim to be looking for ordinary people. Reputed agencies/coordinators might have open interviews during the week, give them a call and find out.

Our Top Ten Modeling tips
1. Always be on time, if you cannot, be let the Photographer know. Punctuality is very important.”safety tip”: If you are not taking anyone with you to the shoot, let someone know where you are and with whom. And be sure to tell the photographer that someone knows where you are.

2. Always go prepared : ie…clothing changes that you know will fit you. Don’t always think that he/she will have everything that is needed for the shoot.

3. Always take your own make-up; even if he/she has told you there will be a make-up artist there. Always think of the could be’s.

4. Get references, as many as you can. That would include other models and/or assignments that the photographer has had. Check and double check. And be sure that a legitimate photographer is doing the same with you. Never take anything for granted.

5. Get phone numbers and addresses if possible, if he/she is hesitant. You might want to rethink the shoot.

6. Make sure that you know exactly what the shoot consists of, and never feel pressured to do anything that you do not feel comfortable doing. If nothing else, go by your gut feeling.

7. Always take along enough “cash” for cab fare etc. In case the photographer cannot provide adequate transportation. Most will, but always be prepared for the “just in case”.

8. Keep in mind that modeling is a business, not a personal venture. You need to be prepared to negotiate with prospective employers, regarding everything from pay to content. Don’t just drop out of contact because you don’t like what’s offered - either negotiate or say, “Thanks, but no thanks.” You never know, the employer you turn down could well have your dream job later - and if you treat him or her rudely or with disrespect, you’ll likely miss out.

9. Don’t ever do anything that you might be sorry for later. What you do today can affect your career later down the road. “If you pose for a photo that you cannot show your family and friends, and be proud of it, it wasn’t worth doing”. Mainly YOU should be proud of it.

10. If you have a verbal or signed agreement on traveling expenses etc. Make sure that it is followed up on. Written is sometimes the best.

Maybe you’ve dreamed of gliding down the catwalk in Milan, flashbulbs popping all around, hundreds of people focusing their attention on your grace and beauty. The closets of your Paris apartment are stuffed full of expensive designer clothing, and tomorrow you fly back to New York just in time to catch a party attended by your good friends, Kate Moss, Keanu Reeves, and Ben Affleck. Nice dream. Now wake up.

First things first: you’ve taken the trouble to do a little research, so you’re not a moron. That’s good. Regardless of prevailing stereotypes, you need smarts to break into modeling. Those same smarts will also help you realize that your chances of becoming the sort of supermodel who lands multimillion-dollar endorsements are only a little better than your chances of being killed by a charging rhinoceros - even if you’re beautiful. The success stories are few; even models represented by the best agencies in the world often take other work to supplement their income. Now, if you’re still reading, congratulations. You aren’t easily discouraged, and you’re gonna need that kind of pluck to endure the rejection which is part of every model’s stock and trade. There are several different types and levels of modeling, and if your expectations are realistic, you needn’t feel discouraged.

1. LEARN ABOUT THE INDUSTRY
There are many different kinds of models, including child models, plus-size models, and parts models (whose hands you see in all those diamond ring ads). Fashion models must usually conform to rather rigid physical criteria, but there are others models called “real-life models,” who are often also actors. They are just what the name suggests: ordinary looking people used in catalogues and commercials to represent someone the average consumer can identify with. The white-haired guy with the potbelly on the Golf Resorts billboard is a real-life model. If it turns out that you aren’t quite what they’re looking for in a fashion model, consider this sort of work (or consider becoming a character actor). There are other paths to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
For the purposes of this SYW, though, we’re focusing on the model that gets all the attention: the cat-walking high-fashion model.

What it takes to be a fashion-model

If you’re female . . .
You should be somewhere between 15 and 22 years old, though probably closer to fifteen. Models don’t have careers that last as long as say, doctors, so agencies tend to want to invest their time in someone young.

You should be tall, long-legged, and lean. The minimum height is usually about 5′8″, and average weight for a model is 108-125 lbs. These characteristics are partly aesthetic and partly practical: this type of frame looks good on the runway and in front of the camera (which, they say, adds 15 pounds); and a somewhat scrawny build drapes clothing nicely and ensures a good fit in the standard wardrobe. There are always exceptions to the rule, of course - Kate Moss is 5′7″ and Gabrielle Reece is a giant 6′3″ - but, in general, the closer you are to the industry norm, the better your chances.

If you’re male . . .

You can start out a little later, roughly between the ages of 18 and 25. They won’t want you to look too childish. The good news is that a man’s modeling career usually lasts longer than a woman’s, and since ten-year-old boys more often dream of blowing things up rather than strutting the Hugo Boss runway, this side of the biz tends to be less competitive as well.

Average dimensions for a male model are a height of 5′11″- 6′2″ and a weight of 140-165 lbs. You should also be fit (not bulging with muscles, but definitely healthy).
All right, so let’s assume you’ve got all of these qualifications. You are, for example, a willowy 16-year-old girl who’s on the basketball team, could squeeze her body through a set of prison bars, and causes old men who shouldn’t be ogling you to stumble over their walkers. That’s great. On top of that you have clear skin, perfect teeth, and your own brand of je ne sais quoi. Fantastic. It’s time for the next step.

2. MAKE YOUR BREAK
Although there is a little bit of freelancing in the business, almost all models work through an agent. Your agent is responsible for getting bookings and ensuring that you show up on time, no matter how hungover you may be. Good agents will also advise you about clothes and hair, and generally guide you through the various stages of your career.

There are several tactics you can employ to get an agent:
Many successful models started their careers effortlessly. They were strolling through the airport with mom and dad on the way back from Disneyland, when a scout from a top agency spotted them, recognized their potential, and gave them a business card. Must be nice. Since you probably haven’t been quite this lucky, proceed to the next method.
Periodically, agencies open their doors to hundreds of local hopefuls. This is known as an “open call.” You herd together in the hallways of an agency with all your competitors, you wait and wait for a turn, and when you finally do get to see someone, it seldom takes more than 30 seconds for the pros to size up what they consider to be your potential. Welcome to the world of big-league rejection. And the good news is that open calls are almost always free. Dress casually in form-hugging clothes so the agent can see what your body is like. Keep the hair simple, and the makeup naturally minimalistic. They want you to present a blank canvass to them-not your glamour look. Don’t waste money on professional photos. If you want, you can just bring in a few informal snaps: full body shots (in a conservative bikini or trunks) from a few angles, one nice head shot, and a casual clothed shot.

Here are some of the top agencies (all of which are based in New York):

Elite
New York, NY
Phone: 212-529-9700

Ford

Next
Phone: 212-242-2444
E-mail: newyork@bossmodels.com

You don’t have to wait around for an open call. If you get on the phone and the agency tells you their open call is six months off, ask if you can just drop by. Don’t stop at one; go around to as many of the top agencies as you can.

Several large agencies tour the country with a model search, a beauty contest with the purpose of finding the next Christy, Tyra or Claudia. Thanks to events like these, all the seemingly gawky Betty Sues out there can get a shot at proving their exotic supermodel potential (they never would’ve got off the farm if the fashionistas hadn’t come to Pig Snout, Nebraska). As long as there’s a reputable agency behind it and the entry fees aren’t too extravagant (most, though not all, model search contests will have entry fees), a model search is a good way to at least meet people in the industry.

The most expensive option is to attend a modeling convention. Entry fees tend to be high, but you get the opportunity to meet representatives from several different agencies all at the same time (and the chance to learn more about the industry in general). If one of these should happen to open in your city, by all means, check it out.
Register with www.modelsandtalent.com on the net. This is a well-respected service through which model scouts browse. It’s a place to post an electronic profile so that the pros can check you out. Also try Minx Models.

Once the agency gets a look at you and decides it likes what it sees, an agent will arrange for you to have portfolio pictures taken, a composite card printed, and a résumé put together. Again, you must remember that you are trying to make money, not spend it (see Step 3), so don’t waste cash on portfolios until you get signed up with a manager. The agency will probably have a specific look in mind for you anyway, and they’ll want to start from scratch. A portfolio (or “book”) is what you take along to modeling job interviews, called “go-sees.” In your portfolio are a series of shots taken by an agency-recommended photographer, and it reflects the agency’s marketing strategy for you. Composite cards, or comp cards, are what you leave behind with the prospective employer: a single printed sheet of photos to help them remember you.

3. AVOID SCAMS
There are really two modeling industries: the legitimate one that pays models a fair price for their services; and the evil one which preys on the hopes and dreams of foolish young people (a.k.a. “suckers”). To avoid getting snookered, you have to remind yourself again and again that you’re getting into modeling to make money, and not to give it away. This is business, so be stingy. There are lots of con artists posing as photographers, and there are lots of shady organizations calling themselves “agencies” and “schools.” So here’s what you have to watch out for:

Photographers who try to sell you expensive portfolio shots before you approach any agencies. This is a common one. They tell you that you’ll never get anywhere with an agency unless you have a professional portfolio to show. Not true. Agencies are connected with photographers who understand and express a particular style, and they usually just end up trashing any pictures you walk in with. That’s why snaps are best. Let the agency you sign up with arrange all the portfolio photography for you.

Fly-by-night “agencies” that charge so-called “registration fees,” and are more interested in getting you to pay for expensive portfolios than finding you work. In such places, the phones aren’t ringing as they should be, and the pictures on the walls are of models that have no connection with their business. So when you approach an agency, check them out, make sure they’ve been around for more than three months, and have a nice big ad in the Yellow Pages. Contact the Better Business Bureau to see if there have been any complaints levelled against them.

Modeling schools. Some people believe that they are an outright scam, while others believe that they’re a pretty good way to gain a little experience, so long as you have money to burn. It’s your call to make. Just don’t let anyone tell you that you must go through a school (which always seems to be, coincidentally, their own in-house school) before they’ll even consider you. No one absolutely needs to go to modeling school in order to become a successful model.

Sleazeballs. Flattery, promises to get you working immediately, unusual fees and high-pressure tactics are all signs of a sleazeball operation. When they ask you to pose naked or to have sex in exchange for jobs, then you’ll know you’ve hit rock bottom. Alert the authorities. And keep in mind that, although this sort of thing is more common in less classy operations, it is not altogether unknown at a higher level. Recently, two executives (President Gerald Marie of Elite Europe, and Xavier Moreau, head of the Elite Model Look Contest), were compelled to resign after a BBC documentary caught them treating their business as a sex farm. Yes, this was rather idiosyncractic, but it proves that you should be aware.

4. BUILD YOUR CAREER
You finally got yourself an agent . . . good for you. That’s nine-tenths of the battle. It’s sometimes said that if you’re serious about modeling, you should pack your bags and go straight to New York, and that’s partly true. New York City is the U.S. jump-off point for the modeling world’s Grand Tour, and most supermodels live in the Big Apple for at least part of the year. That doesn’t mean, however, that a couple of years in Miami or L.A. are gonna kill your career. Hard work, charm, connections and luck all play a part in where you end up. No matter where you’re based, if you sign with a big agency that’s based in New York (as most of them are), there’s a good chance that you’ll end up there. But also keep in mind that there is still a demand for models in secondary markets such as Chicago, Philadelphia and Phoenix.

So as you get ready to embark on your career, keep the following points in mind:
Be prepared to spend your mornings schlepping burgers at McDonald’s. Well all right, maybe it won’t be that bad, but the fact is that most models (even at the higher levels) need a supplemental job to pay the bills. In addition to that, the average model can’t expect her career to last more than eight years, so don’t skip college! Parties, money in pocket, and a busy schedule make it very tempting to bypass the standard education route, but if you get hit by a bus and one leg becomes 8 inches shorter than the other, your modeling career will be in the toilet and you’ll be stupid. So stay in school. Linda Evangelista may be earning millions a year well into her thirties, but you probably won’t. Make sure you have contingency plans in place.

The actual work is never quite as romantic as the dream. Think endless hours in airports, rushing from appointment to appointment, shoots that seem to drag on forever, and chaffed thighs from changing into eighty different swimsuits in two hours. Yes, there’s a lot of great partying. (For some strange reason models seem to get invited out a lot.) But there’s an obvious potential downside to unlimited fun: the collapse of your career and a stint in the Betty Ford Clinic.

If your agency uses a contract, take the trouble to have your own lawyer look at it before you sign. Also, find out what unions you may be required to join, and whether or not you are free to sideline at a different agency. Consult an accountant about which receipts you should be saving, and keep careful track of the money you earn. A little attention to business now will save you many headaches later on.

And those are the essentials. Memorize them, get out there, and take your own personal shot at runway nirvana. The 21st century needs a new face - it could be yours. Be smart, be brave, and be beautiful.

The focus in our beauty-oriented world is on physical attractiveness, and models certainly need to possess that attribute. Think about how much you enjoy looking at attractive men and women. You will be glued to that beauty as long as it’s in eyesight. You will think about or comment on specifics… beautiful hair or eyes, handsome physique, beguiling smile. But, as we had said many times, modeling is so much more than just looking good.

Bimbo-ism is a state of mind. Although the word initially referred to men (male baby or very young child), common usage in the last century in the English language referred to women who are totally focused on physical appearance and neglect other parts of their persona. Many models believe the only thing important about her work is how she looks. She couldn’t be more mistaken. The exaggerated value she puts on her physical appearance stifles the other requirements necessary for successful modeling.

So what IS important for models to consider in developing their career? We suggest the Body-Mind-Spirit concept that has proven so helpful in other life arenas. And we wouldn’t necessarily put ‘Body’ first in that threesome.

First, recognize the value of your Mind. Develop interests outside the modeling world. Read something other than modeling/beauty magazines. Stay in touch with what’s going on in the world so you can keep ‘Body’ in its appropriate place. The successful model projects a serene sense of knowing what’s important in life, where he/she belongs in the world and finds that place good.

Second, stay in touch with your ‘Spirit’. If you don’t know how to do that, read. Some will find Spirit through organized religion. Others will not. Learn to meditate. Develop your Spirit-life so that no matter what outside events you encounter, your Spirit will help you understand those events and deal with them. Life is never fair and it’s not always happy. Your Spirit supports you during the tough times and creates a strength that sustains you throughout your life. The ‘Spirit’ of the successful model can be seen on her/his face. It glows.

Third, take care of your Body. Yes, physical beauty is important. And beauty is defined in many ways. Don’t limit your attractiveness to sex appeal. Exercise regularly, eat well, get enough sleep. Learn how to apply make-up and style your hair in ways that will enhance your unique beauty. Work on developing a natural look that allows your Mind and Spirit to shine through your Body. And most important, the successful non-Bimbo model keeps all three parts of her life in balance and harmony.

When it comes to modeling, many people have the notion that they either have to live in California or in New York or Toronto. After all, that’s where most of the big modeling agencies are. Granted, if you lived in Los Angeles, California or New York City, you’d probably have an easier time getting into the modeling industry.

But what if you can’t just pack your things and move to California or New York? What then? Up until now, there was nothing the “new model” could do.

The following tips will get you on your way into the modeling industry quickly and easily:

1. Take Pictures, specifically Head Shots – keep them simple. Wear neat and clean clothing. Don’t worry about wearing the latest fashion or style. Ladies, keep your make up simple. In fact, it would be best if you had several pictures of you without any make up. The same goes for hairstyles. Clear your face of any hair so that your face is fully visible. Keep your hair neat, clean and simple. If you can’t afford a professional photographer, then use a basic camera. Make sure you have good lighting.

2. You will need a resume of yourself. In your resume, include your Modeling Experience, hobbies, interests, and vital stats such as height, and weight. This is called a portfolio that what agencies will review.

3. Research the addresses of modeling agents and agencies in your area. You can look this up in your local phone book, public library and online at Hollywood North. There are literally thousands of agencies across Canada and the United States to contact.

4. After sending out your portfolio, do a follow up phone call or email every 2 weeks afterwards. Remember, these agencies may be getting hundreds of portfolios sent to them each week. What will get their attention? Make follow up phone calls – lots of them.

5. Utilize as many communications tools as possible. This includes calling them on the phone, emailing, sending letters through direct mail, and leverage the web including sites like Hollywood North. The best thing is to use a combination of all of the aforementioned.

6. Develop your modeling skills. Look for local modeling schools or classes in or near your area. If there are none, then research your public library for books or videos. If you still have no luck, then you can go online to places such as Amazon.com and other booksellers that will have modeling videos and books.
7. Stay clear of any Model Agency telling you that you have to pay money to sign on with them. In general, Agencies receive a commission when you work.

Just because you live in a small town or away from the big cities, does not mean that you don’t have the opportunity to get into modeling. All it takes is a little more creativity and a little more thought behind your strategies, but you can trust that many successful models have been in your shoes. Like you, these models have succeeded because they did not take “no” for an answer and had some luck.
